The adventures really ramp up as our young people progress on to Scouts. At Buxted we encourage independence and participation at every opportunity, helping to take their scouting skills to the next level.
Friendships will be deepened by time together, away from home. Each term includes an ambitious programme of camps, organised by leaders who are as excited to be going as the young people themselves.
Training camps are geared towards ensuring younger scouts have all the basic practical skills such as being able to put up and take down a tent, cook their own meals and generally have the confidence to thrive outdoors with minimal help. Summer camp is the main event and in recent years we’ve taken the Scouts to the Lake District, where they experienced the thrills of canyoning and gorge jumping, and sunny Dorset for beach and sea action. The Discovery Sailing Project in Portsmouth has given dozens of Scouts a chance to sail demanding yachts and learn sailing drills.
Scouts continue to challenge themselves by working towards badges. Activity badges recognise hobbies and achievements outside scout meetings as well as during and could be on anything – from equestrian to the environment, martial arts to mechanics; where there’s an interest, there’s a badge! Challenge Award badges are more in-depth and encourage Scouts to try their hand at things in which they might not normally be interested.
Throughout the year district-wide hiking events test our Scouts’ endurance and survival abilities and build resilience. We prepare them fully with lots of training hikes and Buxted always does well in these competitions. Most importantly though, we just really enjoy the challenge and time outdoors, taking in the beauty of the Ashdown Forest and dramatic South Downs.
Opportunities for our young people to gain leadership skills on hikes, at regular meetings and during camp help to shape Scouts into well-rounded citizens who go on to make a difference in their communities.

Badge Positions
There is a wide range of badges and awards available to young people in Scouts. This is diagram showing where each well-earned badge is to be sewn onto your Scouts shirt. Please speak to your leader if you are unsure about the exact uniform required as this can vary across groups.
